A 100% Renewable Energy Future?
The region of Burgenland in Austria aims to become the first climate-neutral region in Europe by 2025. Austria’s largest energy company, Energie Burgenland AG, is investing two billion euros into an ambitious plan which aims to combat climate change.
The plan, called “Program Burgenland 2025,” has four important goals: expand renewable energy, expand the supply network, increase digitization, and encourage customer involvement. About 75% of the two billion euros will be spent on building new wind turbines and solar farms. The remaining 25% will be spent on improving the supply network to allow the electric grid to handle the increased volume of electricity being generated. Digitization will allow communities to pool resources together and share access to renewable energy. When it comes to climate protection, Burgenland has already made big changes. In 2000 Energie Burgenland AG provided 3% of the region’s energy needs with renewable energy. Today, renewables provide 50%, allowing the company to supply to not only Burgenland but also other regions in the country.
The company hopes that “Program Burgenland 2025” will double profits, cut CO₂ emissions in half, and create more than 6,000 new jobs. CEO Stephan Sharma believes that the investments and planned measures will generate 530 million euros in added value for Burgenland as well as bring Austria and Europe closer to a 100% renewable future.
