More Than Just a Pet?
From sheep to horses, and from cattle to cats, humans have domesticated other animals throughout our history. Only one animal however has earned the title of “man’s best friend”. Of all the animals we have tamed to our benefit, dogs, without a doubt, serve us in the widest array of roles. They are our protectors, helpers, lifesavers and loyal companions.
It is a symbiotic relationship that stretches back more than 15,000 years. It’s a natural connection since both humans and dogs are social animals that thrive when part of a social community. Neither species can flourish when alone and indeed both suffer mentally, and sometimes physically, from a lack of strong social bonds.
We have domesticated dogs to the point where they need us to survive. However, many dog owners would argue that we tend to need them just as much. Dogs are often treated as members of the family and enjoy a position similar to human children.
Dogs are loyal, loving, understanding, and affectionate. They greet us eagerly when we return home and love us even when we are miserable, rude or grumpy with them. They sometimes seem to understand us better than we understand ourselves.
Dogs also carry out numerous jobs that simply couldn’t be done without them. Dogs are used to herd sheep, hunt for truffles, act as guides for the blind, and some are even trained to sniff out diseases such as cancer and COVID-19. Dogs are also employed by police to detect drugs, by the military to search for explosives, and by rescue teams to find survivors. If ever an animal deserved the title of “man’s best friend”, it’s dogs.
